Omniscient!

Quick Recap:

In our previous posts, we learnt that God is both Omnipotent and Omnipresent.  He is ALL powerful and EVER present!

my god is so big

Great Big God!

Did you ever sing the following song at Sunday School when you were young?

My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,

There’s nothing My God cannot do?

The Mountains are His, the rivers are His,

The stars are His handiwork too!

My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,

There’s nothing My God cannot do!

Well, do you know what?  It’s not just a nice little song.  EVERY SINGLE WORD of that song is absolutely true!

Read It!

mountain peaks and river

The Mountains are His:

In His hand are the depths of the earth and the Mountain peaks belong to Him – Psalm 95:4

The rivers (and seas) are His:

The sea is His, for it was He who made it, and His hands formed the dry land.” – Psalm 95:5

The stars are His handiwork too:

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars which You have set in place…” Psalm 8:3

moon and stars

To tell you the truth, trying to write about the BIGNESS of God, is a very difficult thing to do!  As humans, we are so limited.  We don’t have enough words…we don’t have enough understanding to fully behold the awesome wonder of God.  He is just so vast!  So powerful!  So glorious!  We can only really scratch the surface!

Can you discover the depths of God?  Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?  – Job 11:7

In light of all these things then, it becomes all the more staggering, to realise that this GREAT, BIG, HUMUNGUS GOD is interested in the likes of me…and you!  But more about that later.

All-Knowing

Another one of God’s amazing attributes is His OMNISCIENCE!

Well, what on earth does that mean?  Let’s break the word ‘OMNISCIENT’ down:

Omni = all
‘Scient’ is a Latin word which means:  “possessing knowledge and understanding and wisdom”.

It’s where we get the word ‘Science’ from.

In other words, God knows ALL there is to know about EVERYTHING!

Read It!

Oh the depths of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!  How unsearchable are His judgements and unfathomable His ways! – Romans 11:33

God’s conversation with Job

In the book of Job, we begin to get a glimpse into the sheer enormity of God’s knowledge and wisdom.  Here are just a few of the things that God said to Job:

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?

Tell Me, if you have understanding.

Who set its measurements?  Since you know.

Have you ever in your life commanded the morning,

And caused the dawn to know its place,

That it might take hold of the ends of the earth?

Have you entered into the springs of the sea

Or walked in the recesses of the deep?

Have you entered the storehouses of the snow,

Or have you seen the storehouses of the hail?

Can you lift up your voice to the clouds

So that an abundance of water may cover you?

Do you know the ordinances of the heavens,

Or fix their rule over the earth?

Can you count the clouds, or tip the water jars of the heavens?

WOW!  Mind-blowing, hey?!  You can find the rest of this astonishing conversation, in Job 38.  It’s well worth a read.

And the answer to all of these questions, of course, is NO!  No one on earth can do ANY of these things.  But God can!  He can do ANYTHING!  Nothing is too difficult for Him!  God sees all things, God knows all things.  He knows all there is to know about EVERYTHING!

But best of all, He knows each and every one of us intricately!

Look at these words from Psalm 139

O Lord, you have searched me and known me,

You know when I sit down and when I rise up,

You understand my thoughts from afar.

You scrutinise my path, and my lying down,

And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.

Even before there is a word on my tongue,

Behold, O Lord, You know it all!

God KNOWS each one of us inside out!  He knows all our thoughts.  He knows what we’re going to say before we say it.  He knows when we go to bed at night, and when we get up in the morning.  The text tells us that “He is intimately acquainted with all our ways” – that means, that He knows all our quirks, all our peculiarities and all the unique little things that make us who we are!  Jesus tells us in the gospel of Luke, that even the very hairs on our heads are numbered!

It’s astounding to think that such a GREAT BIG GOD, would care to know every detail of our lives like this!  But it’s absolutely true.  What an amazing thing it is to be loved by such a great big God!
