What the Stars Say

A Maldivian Sunset – taken on a recent holiday

  • Have you ever watched a sunset and been amazed by the array of beautiful colours?
  • Have you ever looked up at a sky full of stars and marvelled at the sheer expanse of the heavens?
  • Have you ever looked at the beautiful world around you – fields and valleys and mountains and oceans and just thought: “Wow?!”

That feeling that you get inside of you has been put there by God.  That’s God speaking to you through creation!

Read It!

Let’s take a look at Psalm 19:1-4:

The heavens are telling the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.  Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.  There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard.  Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their utterances to the end of the world.

In other words, even though the sun, moon and stars can’t literally speak –  they communicate SO MUCH about the majesty of the One who put them there!  It’s as if they are crying out: “LOOK – Isn’t He awesome?”

Consider This…

Have you ever thought about the way the sun rises in the morning, and sets every evening?  This happens day in, day out, in every nation under the sun!

It can be so easy to miss the brilliance of this – I mean it’s happened every single day, since…like FOREVER!

But it only happens because God commanded it to!

God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also.  God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good.” Genesis 1:16-18

Okay, so if that doesn’t blow your mind, how about an event that only takes place every once in a while?  How about the precision of an eclipse?

(Anyone with a head for Maths might want to try and wrap your brain around this!)

  • The moon is 240,000 miles from the earth.
  • This is 1/400th the distance between the sun and the earth.
  • The sun’s diameter just happens to be 400 times that of the moon so that when the moon lines up with the sun, it is a perfect fit!

This is jaw-droppingly brilliant!

The sun and the moon were not just randomly plonked into the heavens by some chance cosmic event- they were inch-perfectly placed by the hand of an Almighty Maker!

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moons and the stars which you have ordained…Psalm 8:3

You see that word “ordained”, right there?…that means “Set in place!”  And if you look back to the Genesis verse again, it agrees with this:  “God placed them in the expanse of the heavens…!”

God put the sun and the moon EXACTLY where they were supposed to be.  And the only reason they stay there is because He says so:

He upholds the universe by the word of His power!” – Hebrews 1:3

So if you ever need reminding about the awesomeness of God, take a leaf out of David, the Psalmist’s book, and just look up!  Perhaps if you listen closely, you will hear the message the heavens are shouting out to us: “Isn’t He amazing?!  Isn’t He magnificent?  There is No One like our God!  How Majestic is His Name in all the earth!”

God’s glory can be seen through Creation!
